A Cheaper Way

Price comparison websites have become very popular in recent years. Their rise to prominence has come from offering to do the legwork for people so that they don’t have to go through the sometimes laborious process of ringing individual insurance companies. The theory is that the comparison website will look across the entire market for you and produce the very best deal.

The problem is that it’s not always that simple in regards to some forms of insurance. Life insurance is perhaps a good policy to buy through a comparison website, there isn’t a great amount of difference between various term life insurance policies, and it is simply a case of getting the lowest premium and the best payout.

When it comes to home insurance however things are very different. First of all home insurance is composed of two other forms of insurance, buildings insurance (which covers the fabric of your house) and contents insurance (which covers anything you would take with you were you to move house). As no two sets of people’s possessions are the same it is not surprising to find that no two home insurance policies are identical, and if you are settling for a bog-standard template insurance, you should probably talk to the insurer and see if you can get a policy more suited to your own particular circumstance and see if you can save money accordingly.

Further, not all insurance companies are selling their policies through price comparison websites at the moment. Comparison websites get their money either through advertising or through commission from the companies who actually provide the insurance, that money is, more often than not, going to be included in the costs of your policy and therefore it may be cheaper to go direct to the insurer on several levels.

That is not to say that comparison websites should be discounted completely, they are a very good place to start your search if for no other reason aside from giving you an idea of a general cost for your insurance policy. They are also likely to give you a good deal, but possibly not a brilliant one, and in the current economic situation it is definitely worth putting in the hours to get a deal that is really the best out there for you.

One place to look for a good home insurance deal at the moment is Co-operative insurance. As a mutual company they have weathered the economic storm with relative comfort and therefore are in a position to offer some really good deals.
