If you are lucky enough to have an older car fitted with a SU or Stromberg carburettor you can use a Colortune http://www.baconsdozen.co.uk/tools/Colortune.htm to set the mixture more accurately than the lift pin and check it over the rev range rather than just at tick over.
The colortunes can also be used on fixed jet carbs but these are harder to set,involving changing jets etc.However if you want to check the mixture strength the colortune will give you an accurate indication of wether the vehicle is running too rich or weak.
