The
Wolseley 6/80 saloon was launched in October 1948, alongside
the smaller four cylinder 4/50 saloon to which it was
very similar in appearance. Both of these two
cars were of all steel unitary construction, and from
the front windscreen backwards were near identical to
their BMC Morris Oxford MO & Morris Six relatives. The Wolseley versions were the more luxurious offerings,
and featured
leather seats walnut dashboard & door cappings, and were fully carpeted.
During its production the 6/80 (the 6 representing
the number of cylinders, and the 80 the engine's approximate
bhp) underwent many significant changes, including improvements
to the suspension and cylinder head, and internally
better front seats were fitted. The 6/80 saloons were
much favoured by the British police forces of the time,
and many of the police owned Wolseley's received
tuning modifications to enhance performance. The 6/80
was discontinued in October 1954.
