The Wolseley 4/50 saloon, powered by an all-new single overhead camshaft engine, was launched in October 1948 at the same time as the larger six-cylinder 6/80. These two cars, both of all steel unitary construction, were very similar from the front windscreen backwards to the Morris Oxford MO & Morris Six, which were launched at the same time. This was not surprising as Morris and Wolseley were part of the Nuffield group formed in 1938 by William Morris (or Viscount Nuffield as he was then), Morris having bought Wolseley in 1927. The 4/50 was discontinued in 1953 when it was replaced by the 4/44.
